Texas Emails Posted

The first batch of files recieved from the Office of the Governor of Texas in response to November 6, 2007 Public Information Act Request are now posted on Box.net in the TXGovEmails-20071106PIR folder.

I am sure Watchdog will find most of it drivel and dross, but others can now look for themselves and see if there is any "paydirt" in this chaotic, mash-up of data.

The files are posts as recieved no alterations have been made. The files were delivered on a single CD-ROM and all with in a single directory of that CD-ROM.

Fantastic Work!!!! I am truely impressed with your resolve. I have had issues with this Perry led administratoin from the start and their bad policies are part of my issue.

On a side note - many email servers keep backups of all emails for long periods fo time. Before they think to erase those records, and I am sure they will, you need to request them fast. No matter what they shred there may still be electronic copies on the server or on backup media of the server.

I was waiting for a response to watchdogs comment but nothing from you so far ???? So I have cut and pasted it below as a reminder.
I am sure "solarcap" is a dem and probably sent you some of that money he should have sent to the kids with cancer at Christmas!!!!
But hey ... another dem as gov in Texas won't be so bad .... can't wait!

John,
I just don't get it. You call yourself a republican, yes I read some of your other posts. But yet with soooo much other low hanging fruit available, you pick the Texas Gov. So that leads me to believe that your intentions are to make him look bad thus giving the Dems one more bullet for the next election. You don't believe a bad Rep is better then a good Dem ???? I don't believe there is a such a thing as a "good" Dem ... just some that are tolerable. Especially since you seem to lean to the extreme right can you understand my confusion. Diamond Jim, as you call him, should give you enough to keep you busy all of your waking hours. Seems like you got an axe to grind with Texas and your posts are coming off as personal.
I guess thats OK, but please review your intentions and consider the long term effects of your actions. Are they really in the best interests of Texas to make the current Gov look bad?
Oh by the way, I do not live in Texas.

The point of the short sequential PIA requests was precisely because the emails on the servers are deleted quickly; after seven days the emails on the servers are erased.

Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, or Green, seven days is an obnoxiously short retention period for public records.

There are some principles which transcend party.

But, in retrospect is was unwise to pick a fight 3000 miles from home. But, in for penny in for a pound.

Good work, John. I think you are a true conservative and those "Republicans" who berate you are not conservatives. A conservative would never attack someone for asking that government be held accountable for the use of tax dollars. These people should think about the implications of what they say and be ready to apply any standard they apply here to questions about the Clintons or Democrats.
Transparency is government is fundamental to both liberals and conservatives and should be embraced by both parties. Don't be discouraged by a few people who are so worried that a member of their party might be embarrassed that they're wiling to put aside principles.
I'll look forward to following your efforts and I'll try to find some way of helping.

You short sighted morons!!!!!
You just don't get it ...
Let's see if I understand this. The is all this low hanging fruit that is provided free of charge by the dems ... Wi Gov office is perfect example.
But NOOOOO ... I would rather go after members of my own party for the sake of rightiousness, get them voted out of office ... so I have more low hanging fruit. Do you realize what you are asking for???? We are on the brink of having a fully Dem goverment in DC. What are your chances of rightiousness then :-( Please explain what kind if juice you are consuming. I would like to share so I won't have to be conscience for the next chapter in this countries history.

RE: want more info? I need an email address for you. Regarding bruni/zafirrini in laredo?

Thank you, but not particularly. Even if I had the info, what would I do with it? Austin (now that I have looked it up on mapquest) is 1200 miles from Milwaukee.

I began this quest in Texas because of my objection to the destruction of public records after seven days. As simple as that.

It was a fortunate convergence of events in that I had a domain which give me access to chron, perl and SMTP server. I chose do do what many in Austin, Houston or Dallas, could have done as well.

But, I have my own pursuits in in Wisconsin. I will finish what I have started in Texas, but ultimately Texas is for Texans to deal with.

The email for this blog is blog at washburn research dot org.

John, I think you've been jobbed. There are no emails in the CD you received. It looks more like a miscellaneous collection of documents. Emails are files of a very specific format. The files you've been given are definitely NOT emails. If you have free legal representation, you definitely need to call Texas on what appears to be an obvious fraud.

Yes, I know that. I did specify in my public information act requests that emails were documents which conformed to the RFC 822.

But, it is the position of the Office of the Governor, that provididing electronic documents in the original form of those documents is not a requirement of the Texas Public Information Act. The electronic records produced may be garbled in any fashion selected by the responing agency as long as the records are still "readable".

The matter (and others) is currently under review by the Texas Attorney General. An answer from the AG is due by April 1, 2008.

John, thanks for the information. I hope the April 1 due date isn't some weird Texas AG idea of humor. Scanning over what they've provided so far, it appears they've just cobbled together some miscellaneous documents and thrown them your way. Best wishes.

No.

April 1, 2008 is 45 business days after the request for exemption was filed on January 16, 2008.

This skips federal and state holidays. I was unsure of Good Friday, so I included it. If Good Friday is business day for the Office of the Attorney General, then the due date is March 31, 2008.

Hello John,

Is there a way to do a keyword search of the records you have online?

Thanks

The email file is facinating, but it really requires some dissecting to see and understand what is going on there. For example, Perry's office maintains that he doesn't conduct official business via email(http://www.statesman.com/news/content/region/legislature/stories/02/23/23govemail.html), but some of the these emails contain his redacted name and email address as well as reference emails that he sent. Here's just one example:

To: David Eichler
Sent: Sat Oct 27 17:37:33 2007

Sent: Friday, November 02, 2007 4:54 PM

THE PRESIDENTS PHONECALL
My name is Brian O'Reilly I worked at Massachusetts General Hospital as a computer technician,I received a phone call from President George Bush JR at the whitehouse,I was told to leave my job, pay my bills, change my name, and leave the area, and never mention a word of this to anyone, people I worked with were there when the president called, People I worked with kept asking me If I knew him,and asked me why he called,I then contacted my manager and submitted a transfer to the Charlestown facility that M.G.H has,I was so nervous after receiving that phone call from Bush I left my job and left the state, and ended up homeless, all because of a phone call from the whitehouse that I had no explanation for, president George Bush Jr turned me into a homeless person on purpose.and used his position as president to do so, I have witnesses to verify he called.this is wrong considering that I don't work for the whitehouse or the president,I am sure that no one would like this done to them,he had no right to do this to me,I also found out I was under Surveillance, I am making sure everyone knows that BUSH did this, including the press,I want justice....please send this to other people, thank you.
